During the Ocean Energy Europe 2015 conference held in Dublin, Ireland, in late October, about 500 high-level delegates, which included European Union and Member States business leaders and energy ministers, were presented a draft of the “strategic roadmap” for developing the European marine hydrokinetics (MHK) energy sector.
A copy of the draft is not immediately available for public consumption. But, the roadmap sets out the industry’s six-point plan to bring MHK technologies to the marketplace, according to information from OEE.
The strategy also builds on a MHK marketing study the Ocean Energy Forum released in 2014.
In 2014, the European Union created the Ocean Energy Forum to help publicize and highlight promising MHK energy technologies.
In its “Wave and Tidal Energy Market Deployment Strategy for Europe,” a document compiled using funding from the Intelligent Energy Europe program, Ocean Energy Forum makes several recommendations that governments, businesses and financial institutions could employ in order to successfully commercialize emerging MHK energy sectors.
During the OEE conference, according to a press release, European Commissioner for Fisheries and Maritime Affairs, Karmenu Vella, convened a high-level session to discuss the first conclusions of the forum’s strategic roadmap.
Vella called on participants to build on the work achieved and develop a technical blueprint of a risk sharing fund by the next meeting of the Ocean Energy Forum in February. The aim is to present a final roadmap in early 2016.
The presentation also put forth an action plan.
“The action plan provides concrete proposals for public-private cooperation which would turn Europe’s technology leadership into a new industrial sector, providing growth and jobs for Europe,” said Rémi Gruet, Ocean Energy Europe's policy and operations director. “The industry looks forward to working with decision-makers to deliver on this plan.”
France is also taking action to build an infrastructure in the MHK energy sector.
2015 WavEC Seminar
The OEE roadmap presentation precedes the 2015 WavEC Seminar and business to business meetings scheduled for Nov. 16 and 17 in Lisbon, Portugal.
The seminar, with the presence of French, Portuguese and European top experts in the MHK sector, will discuss the following issues:
− Portugal’s and France’s MHK sector;
− WavEC’s competences and national and international partnerships;
− Actual industrial and technological capabilities, and future prospects; and
− European, French and Portuguese vision and development support to the MHK sector.
