News sources are reporting that both turbine-generator units at the 55-MW Cucuana hydroelectric facility, developed by Empresa de Energia del Pacifico S.A. (Epsa), are now operating.

Reports indicate the first unit began operating in August and the second in November 2015.

Construction work on the run-of-river Cucuana plant began in March 2011. It is located in Tolima department and uses water from the Cucuana and San Marcos rivers.

According to BNamericas, the project was built to increase Colombian production of electricity to meet growing industrial and domestic demand. It is expected to produce 250 million kWh of electricity annually, according to Celsia, which is working with Epsa on environmental management and planning of the Cucuana River basin.

Celsia says Cucuana is certified by the United Nations as a Clean Development Mechanism project.

HydroWorld.com reported in December 2010 that Epsa secured two loans totaling 169 billion pesos (US$87.8 million) to finance construction of this plant. Total investment in the project is said to be US$118 million.

Other hydropower plants Epsa owns and operates include 20-MW Amaime in Valle del Cauca department, as well as 120-MW Miel and 40-MW Alto and Bajo Tulua.
