Eaton awarded contract for electrical modernization at 14.1-MW Philpott hydro facility

Eaton has received a contract worth $5.4 million to lead a life extension and electrical modernization project at the 14.1-MW Philpott hydro facility.

Philpott, owned by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers and located on the Smith River in Virginia, features three Francis turbine-generator units. The dam is 920 feet long and 220 feet high and was built to also provide flood protection.

Eaton will design, manufacture, deliver, install and commission electrical powerhouse distribution and control systems, as well as oversee the construction of a new building to house the upgraded electrical equipment.

Some of the facility’s existing components date back to 1953, when the powerhouse began service, according to Eaton.

The work is expected to be complete in June 2016.
