Sotiropoulos named dean of Stony Brook College of Engineering and Applied Sciences

Dr. Fotis Sotiropoulos has been appointed Dean of the College of Engineering and Applied Sciences at Stony Brook University in New York.

This appointment, effective Oct. 15, positions Sotiropoulos to “propel our acclaimed College of Engineering and Applied Sciences to the top tier of our nation’s engineering programs,” according to Stony Brook University President Samuel L. Stanley Jr.

Previously, Sotiropoulos was the James L. Record Professor of Civil, Environmental and Geo-Engineering and Director of the St. Anthony Falls Laboratory at the University of Minnesota, Twin Cities. Before that, he was on the faculty of the School of Civil and Environmental Engineering at the Georgia Institute of Technology.

He has a PhD in aerospace engineering from the University of Cincinnati, a master’s in aerospace engineering from Pennsylvania State University and a diploma in mechanical engineering from the National Technical University of Athens. Sotiropoulos has authored more than 160 peer-reviewed journal papers and book chapters.

The College of Engineering and Applied Sciences is comprised of nine academic departments and offers 18 undergraduate and graduate programs to an enrollment of more than 3,800 undergraduate and more than 1,500 graduate students.

Sotiropoulos’ selection was made following a national search.
