Upgrades at JSC RusHydro's 2,300-MW Zhigulevskaya hydropower plant continue as 14 of the project's 20 turbine units have now been replaced.

Located on the Volga River in Russia, rehabilitation of the plant is part of the Russian utility's comprehensive modernization program.

The new five-bladed turbine, manufactured by OJSC Power Machines, was designed for a higher water flow rate. Components within the generator and new control, vibration monitoring and diagnostic systems have also been provided.

The renovation will increase Zhigulevskaya's output capacity to about 2,488 MW once the remaining units are upgraded. The project is expected to be complete in 2018.

HydroWorld.com reported that RusHydro had awarded a contract worth about US$370.7 million to equipment manufacturer Power Machines in September 2010 to supply turbines for the first phase of the upgrade, which saw the replacement of nine units.
