66-MW McLymont Creek hydro plant in British Columbia begins operating

The 66-MW McLymont Creek hydro plant, owned by AltaGas Ltd., began operating Oct. 1.

The powerhouse systems and high-voltage switchyard were commissioned in September, and the facility is now delivering power to the Northwest Transmission Line, according to a press release. AltaGas expects final project commercial operations to be achieved in the fourth quarter of 2015.

This run-of-river facility is located on the Iskut River in British Columbia, Canada.

“The safe commissioning of McLymont marks the final stage in our $1 billion Northwest Projects, the most significant construction undertaking in AltaGas’ history,” says David Harris, president and chief operating officer.

The Northwest Projects are three hydro plants built on the Iskut River in the Tahltan Nation’s territory. The other facilities include 195-MW Forrest Kerr, which began operating in October 2014, and 16-MW Volcano Creek, which began operating in December 2014. Total investment for the three plants was $1 billion.

A 60-year, fully indexed electricity purchase agreement is in place with BC Hydro.

AltaGas is an energy infrastructure business with a focus on natural gas, power and regulated utilities.
