Ontario Power Generation, Taykwa Tagamou partnering to develop 28-MW Sutherland hydropower plant

New Post Creek Hydropower Project Map

Work has begun on the 28-MW Sutherland hydropower plant in Ontario, partners Ontario Power Generation and Coral Rapids Power have announced.

The US$228.3 million project -- named after community leader Peter Sutherland Sr. -- will divert water through a powerhouse from New Post Creek before re-depositing it some 250 meters away in the Abitibi River.

"Just over two years ago we committed to move forward with this project and today I'm pleased to announce the start of construction," Ontario Minister of Energy Bob Chiarelli said. "This project will provide clean, reliable, affordable power while benefitting the local and regional economies."

Coral Rapids Power is wholly-owned by the Taykwa Tagamou Nation, which hopes to fill many of the anticipated 220 jobs associated with the Sutherland project's construction with First Nation members. The plant is expected to be completed in 2018.

"We are excited to partner with OPG on this project," TTN chief Dwight Sutherland said. "OPG has a proven track record partnering with First Nation communities.

"We wanted to work with them on this project, which will provide lasting economic opportunities for the people of Taykwa Tagamou Nation, for this generation and many to follow."

Ontario Power Generation said that a partnership between Kiewit and Aecon had been selected as the design-build contractors through a competitive process.
