Genex Power has appointed consulting firm Entura to provide a feasibility study for the 330-MW Kidston pumped-storage hydropower plant, proposed for construction in North Queensland, Australia.

The project would be build at the site of the Kidston Gold Mine, which includes two large adjacent pits that would act as the plant's upper and lower reservoirs.

Entura -- a subsidiary of Australian utility Hydro Tasmania -- will also oversee subcontracted geotechnical and bathymetric surveys, and manage environmental and planning approvals.

"The Genex board will work closely with Entura to deliver a bankable feasibility study on budget, and is on track to complete the work by June 30, 2016," Genex managing director Michael Addison said.

The feasibility phase will see Entura partnering with Hydrochina, per a memorandum of understanding signed in November 2014.

"As part of Hydro Tasmania, Entura brings a utility-owner perspective, deep local experience, regulatory knowledge and optimization capability to the Kidston pumped-storage project, while Hydrochina brings a wealth of specialist experience in the development and construction of pumped-storage hydro stations," Entura managing director Tammy Chu said.

If built, Kidston would be Australia's third pumped-storage hydropower project.
