Eagle Creek expands small hydro portfolio with construction, acquisition

Blue Heron Hydropower Project

Eagle Creek Renewable Energy LLC has broken ground on a pair of small hydropower projects Vermont and acquired another in New Hampshire, the New Jersey-based company has announced.

The new projects include the 2.196-MW Ball Mountain plant in Jamaica, Vt., and 924-kW Townshend plant in Townshend, Vt., which together form what Eagle Creek calls the Blue Heron project. Both plants make use of existing U.S. Army Corps of Engineers flood control dams on the West River.

Eagle Creek marked the beginning of construction with a ceremony that also included construction firm D.A. Collins and construction management firm White & Reader Associates earlier this month.

The company said access roads and control buildings are now being built, with turbine-generators manufactured by Obermeyer Hydro Inc. expected to be installed next month.

Power generated by the Blue Heron project will be sold to Vermont utilities through the state's Sustainably Priced Energy Enterprise Development (SPEED) program.

Eagle Creek received the development rights for the projects in August 2012 when it purchased Blue Heron Hydro LLC.

Meanwhile, Eagle Creek has also closed on the acquisition of the 1.5-MW Newfound facility. Located on the Newfound River in Bristol, N.H., the plant was most recently rehabilitated in the 1980s after being purchased by private investors from Bristol Hydroelectric.

Eagle Creek said the construction and acquisition gives it a 43-project portfolio that will have a total installed capacity of 104 MW.
