Schottel Hydro receives MeyGen tidal turbine parts contract

German marine propulsion manufacturer Schottel Hydro has received a contract from Lockheed Martin to deliver variable pitch hubs for tidal turbines to be installed at Scotland's MeyGen project.

The hubs will be a component of the MeyGen Phase 1a AR1500 tidal turbines, which are being built by Atlantis Resources Ltd. and Lockheed Martin. Lockheed Martin received a contract from Atlantis Resource in March to manufacture the turbine's steel housing and modules after Lockheed previously provided optimization services during the design phase.

Each of the 1.5-MW AR1500 units will have an approximate rotor diameter of 18 meters, while each Schottel-manufactured hub will have a housing diameter of 2.4 meters and weight of about 35 tons. The company said an "active pitch mechanism inside adjusts the rotor blades to the flow and thus adds to the optimum alignment of the full yaw turbine."

Schottel anticipates delivery of the first hub taking place in early 2016, with installation of the first turbine at MeyGen expected later in the year.

"Taking part in this project is a great honor for us and our work," Schottel Hydro project manager Jens-Henning Bernstein said.

Atlantis Resources had acquired the 398-MW MeyGen array in November 2013 after previously holding a 10% interest in its developer, MeyGen Limited. Atlantis Resources was then awarded a US$10.55 million grant from the European Commission's Seventh Framework Programme for Research and Technological Development in February of the same year.

"MeyGen is an important step forward for the emerging global tidal energy business," Shottel managing director Niels A. Lange said. "And the AR1500 will be a milestone for the harvesting of instream tidal energy." reported that contractors began horizontal drilling operations at the MeyGen site at Ness of Quoys earlier this year, creating bores to be used for transmission lines leading to shore from an array of four AR1500 units. ABB received a contract to supply an onshore grid connection for this first phase of the site's development last August.
