Power Machines has completed and shipped the third and last 46.6 MW turbine unit for Turkey's 140-MW Kygy hydroelectric power plant, the Russian equipment manufacturer announced earlier this month.

The contract -- awarded in December 2013 by the Turkish Directorate for State Hydraulic Works -- also includes pre-turbine gates, three generators of similar capacity, all electro-mechanical equipment and a switchgear.

The project is scheduled for commissioning in 2016 and reflects Power Machines' desire to increase its presence in Turkey. The company previously provided equipment and installation supervision for the country's Torul hydropower plant.

Turkey has been active in cultivating its hydroelectric resources through a number of recent initiatives. reported in February that the Turkish government had allocated US$16 billion to developing its hydro sector as part of its 10th Development Plan.

The country's potential hydropower generation is estimated at about 433 terawatt-hours a year, of which about 140 TWh a year is thought to be economically viable. Turkey also last year requested an Official Development Assistance loan from Japan for a 1,400-MW pumped-storage project at Gokcekaya Dam in Eskisehir Province.
