NYPA reaches milestone in small hydropower plant overhauls

The New York Power Authority has reached the halfway point in its multi-year overhauls of the Crescent, Vischer Ferry and Askohan small hydroelectric facilities.

The capital improvement project includes $20 million to replace four of eight turbine-generators at the Vischer Ferry and Crescent projects, allocated under NYPA's Life Extension and Modernization (LEM) Program, and an additional $4 million to upgrade control equipment for 10 units at Askohan

NYPA purchased 12-MW Vischer Ferry and 12-MW Crescent from the New York State Department of Transportation in 1984. The utility added two turbines to each run-of-river plant in 1990 before overhauling the original units at both facilities in 1993.

The work includes refurbishing major components on units NYPA installed in 1990, in addition to replacing three flow-regulating gates and two overhead cranes that are nearly a century old.

"These hydro projects are small but vital components to the Power Authority's clean energy portfolio," NYPA regional manager for Central New York Brian Saez said. "The ongoing upgrades at these facilities will ensure they continue operating efficiently for many years to come, contributing to the state's economical power supplies."

Meanwhile, the upgrade marks the first significant capital project at the 5-MW Ashokan since the plant's first pair of turbines were commissioned in 1982.
