U.S. seeks relays, switchgear for 21.5-MW St. Marys Falls hydro project

Soo Locks

The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers seeks bids to replace protective relays and switchgear/motor control assemblies at the 21.5-MW St. Marys Falls hydro project on the St. Marys River at Sault Ste. Marie, Mich. A pre-bid meeting and a site visit are planned June 24 with bids due July 16.

The Corps' Detroit District took information last year on firms able to perform the work.

The Corps' St. Marys Falls project is one of three hydro projects at Soo Locks, the navigation link between Lake Superior and the lower Great Lakes. The others are the 27-MW Edison Sault Electric project, and the nearby 52-MW Francis H. Clergue project.

The Detroit District awarded a contract in 2013 to Windemuller Electric to supply a step-up transformer at Soo Locks. It took bids in 2010 to reconstruct 300 feet of crib dam at Soo Locks.

The Corps now seeks bids to replace the equipment at the St. Marys Falls hydro plant. The work is valued at $1 million to $5 million.

The protective relays monitor the current, voltage, frequency and other types of electric power measurement for the purpose of triggering circuit breakers in the event of an abnormal condition. The switchgear/motor control assemblies provide centralized control, protection and distribution of electrical power to auxiliary plant equipment and circuits.

A solicitation notice may be obtained from the Federal Business Opportunities Internet site, www.fbo.gov, by entering Solicitation No. W911XK15R0007 in the "Keyword/Solicitation #" box. A pre-bid meeting and a site visit are scheduled at 1 p.m., Eastern time, June 24.

Bids are due by 2 p.m., Eastern time, July 16. For information, contact Bruce M. Walrad, U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Detroit District, 477 Michigan Ave., Detroit, MI 48226; (1) 313-226-2134; E-mail: LRE-Quotes@usace.army.mil, bruce.m.walrad@usace.army.mil.
