Fly on the wall

I started writing this blog while I was sitting in on one of my favorite meetings of the year: The steering committee meeting to plan the panel presentation sessions to be presented during HydroVision International 2016.

This year I helped facilitate the work of the New Development track. The people sitting around that table have so many great ideas and great insight and personal experience, I felt like I was watching a tennis match as my head went back and forth while I tried to follow the conversation. Ideas were bouncing around at a rapid pace, enhanced and refined by each individual’s unique perspective.

For those of you who are not familiar with the “setup” of HydroVision International’s educational sessions, it’s worth telling you that we work well in advance and start from scratch every year.

We work hard to compile a committee made up of industry experts in each of the seven areas the panel presentations cover, from asset management to water resources. These experts then start with a blank slate, brainstorming hot topics and what THEY would want to hear and learn from a hydropower industry conference.

We had about 50 people in the room on Tuesday, June 2, in Minneapolis. They worked hard, starting at 8 am and not wrapping up until after 5 pm. They are so dedicated to ensuring the program is useful, relevant, practical … and provocative.

One of the first-time committee members told me afterwards that attending this meeting was like sitting in a conference session, he learned so much from the discussions among his fellow group members, as well as the full committee review process at the end of the meeting.

I can assure you that the sessions that group came up with are hard-hitting and address the true issues people face in all their walks of life in the hydropower industry. We will release this information at a later date, so stay tuned.

Speaking of HydroVision International 2016, it will be held July 26-29 in Minneapolis. We hope you plan to attend, to learn, to network, to exchange ideas and to expand your knowledge of this vibrant industry. I am positive you’ll find it worth your while.

P.S. And of course HydroVision International 2015 is rapidly approaching, just six short weeks away! See you in Portland!
