Andritz to outfit India's 450-MW Shongtong Karcham hydropower plant

International technology conglomerate Andritz has received an order from Himachal Pradesh Power Corp. Ltd. To supply electro-mechanical equipment for India's 450-MW Shongtong Karcham hydropower plant.

The value of the award was not disclosed, but calls for Andritz to supply three Francis turbines and generators, balance of plant, and control and protection equipment.

The run-of-river plant is being built on the Satluj River in the Kinnaur District of India's northern Himachal Pradesh state.

Shongtong Karcham previously received funding from both the Asian Development Bank (ADB) and German development bank KfW -- the latter of which will enforce "comprehensive environmental and social standards", according to Andritz.

Himachal Pradesh has seen a surge in development in recent years, with estimates saying the state holds about a quarter of India's total untapped hydroelectric potential.
