Kelsey Hydropower Project

Canadian utility Manitoba Hydro seeks bids to supply excitation transformers for the 1,340-MW Limestone and 250-MW Kelsey hydroelectric projects on the Nelson River in Manitoba. Bids are due May 22.

The Limestone project was built on the Nelson in the 1990s downstream from the site of the proposed 695-MW Keeyask project. Kelsey has been undergoing major rehabilitation that began in 2006. In other action, Manitoba Hydro is seeking bids in July to equip the 78-MW Pointe du Bois hydroelectric project on the Winnipeg River.

The utility now seeks design, manufacture, delivery and warranty of two indoor, three-phase, 60 Hz, self-cooled, dry-type excitation transformers to be utilized as synchronous generator excitation transformers at Limestone (a 3,200-KVa unit) and Kelsey (an 855-kVA unit). The units will be on rectifier duty and shall be adequately sized to account for harmonic losses.
