A new National Hydropower Association (NHA) member is becoming an increasingly key component in the quest to develop viable marine hydrokinetic systems.

The Marine Institute and the Sustainable Energy Authority of Ireland (SEAI) have tasked SmartBay Ireland, a marine test and demonstration facility in the city of Galway, to manage, operate and promote the Galway Bay one-quarter-scale test site.

Up to 60% of funding for approved projects is available through SEAI.

Located on the west coast of Ireland, SmartBay Ireland allows developers to gain sea experience in less challenging conditions at its site to test smaller scale devices and technology in early stages of development.

According to SmartBay Ireland, its testing and integration process includes; pre-deployment advice, planning, bench testing, field-testing, operation and maintenance and post-deployment assessments and validation.

“Facilities include surface platforms and a sub-sea cabled observatory for the demonstration and validation of new technologies and solutions,” SmartBay sid. “A floating platform SeaStation will be available in Q3 2015, which will simulate a grid connection and will provide power to devices and receive power generated.”

SmartBay Ireland can provide assistance with application preparation.
