Indian infrastructure group GVK has put the first unit at its 330-MW Alaknanda hydropower plant into commercial operation, following synchronization with the country's northern grid earlier this month.

The company said the three remaining 82.5 MW units will be synchronized by the end of June, with full commercial operation to begin soon after.

"The successful synchronization is a major milestone for this challenging project, which has experienced so many trials and tribulations," GVK chairman and managing director Dr. GVK Reddy said.

The run-of-river project -- also referred to as the Shrinagar plant -- is located on the Alaknanda River in India's northern Uttarakhand state. The plant will operate under a power purchase agreement with the state of Uttar Pradesh, with 12% of its output also given free to Uttarakhand. reported in April 2007 that GVK subsidiary Alaknanda Hydro Power Co. Ltd. had awarded a contract to SMEC International of Australia and SMEC India to provide engineering services for the plant, at which point it was estimated that the project would cost US$439.5 million.
