DR Congo seeks sedimentology, pricing, intake capacity studies for 4,800-MW Inga 3 Basse Chute hydro project

The Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) invites expressions of interest from consultants to develop a sedimentology study, an electricity pricing study and an intake capacity study of the proposed 4,800-MW Inga Basse Chute hydroelectric project on the Congo River in the DRC. Responses to three solicitations are due May 4.

The Inga site currently includes the 350-MW Inga 1 and 1,424-MW Inga 2 hydroelectric projects, which are undergoing refurbishment. Additionally, the DRC is developing the 4,800-MW Inga 3 Basse Chute as a step toward development of a 42,000-MW Grand Inga hydroelectric complex.

Sedimentology study

In the first of three solicitations, DRC seeks a consulting firm to develop a sedimentology study for Inga 3 Basse Chute. Work is to include estimating the concentration of sediment in the river and its transport capacity by suspension and bedload, plus evaluation of sediment's impact on operation of the intake and transfer channel under different configurations.

Electricity pricing

In a second solicitation, DRC seeks a consulting firm to develop a study on electricity pricing issues and tariff aspects of Inga 3 Basse Chute. Work is to include providing pre-negotiation support elements of the power purchase agreement, identification of main power buyers and analysis of developer candidate offers in the context of national and international electricity markets.

Intake capacity

In a third solicitation, DRC seeks a consulting firm to conduct a study validating the intake capacity and bathymetric surveys and velocity profiles of the Congo River at the Inga 3 Basse Chute site.

Expressions of interest are due to the address below by 3 p.m., Kinshasa time, May 4, labeled "AMI No. 014/MIN ERH/CGI3/C/MM/PM/RMM/NS/2015/SC: Elaboration d'une Etude pour la Validation de la Capacite de la Prise d'Eau et Releves Bathymetriques et de Profils de Vitesse dans le Cadre du Projet Inga 3 Basse Chute."
