Burundi's water and electric utility invites expressions of interest from consultants to perform additional social and environmental assessments of the 31.5-MW Jiji and 16.5-MW Mulembwe hydroelectric projects being developed in Burundi's Bururi Province. Responses are due April 17.

Regie de Production et de Distribution d'Eau et d'Electricite (REGIDESO) last year recruited consultants to perform a social and environmental assessment of the two hydro projects. More recently, it pre-qualified firms in March to construct the projects and recruited consultants in December to serve as financial management consultant

REGIDESO now invites expressions of interest from consultants to perform complementary social and environmental assessments, including an estimate of the limits of infrastructure sites, updating of resettlement plans, and a resettlement plan for construction of access roads to the projects. Studies are to examine migratory routes of wild birds as well as fish and snake populations along the Jiji and Mulembwe rivers.

Expressions of interest, labeled "Etude d'Impact Environnemental et Social (EIES) Complementaire, Visualisation des Impacts des Limites des Sites des Infrastructures Actualisation des Plans d'Actions de Reinstallation et Complement des PARs pour les Voies d'Acces du Projet Hydroelectrique de Jiji et Mulembwe," are due to the address below by 11 a.m. April 17.

For information, contact Monsieur le Directeur General de la REGIDESO, Projet Hydroelectrique de Jiji et Mulembwe, Avenue des Travailleurs No. 8, BP 660, Bujumbura, Burundi; (257) 22-273246; E-mail: emmanuel_barinzigo@yahoo.com, jfndikumazambo@yahoo.fr, primbijwenge@yahoo.fr.
