A grant from the U.S. Treasury Department will help Rochester Gas & Electric make efficiency improvements at the company's 46-MW Station 5 hydropower plant on New York's Genesee River.

The US$16.5 million grant is provided through the 2009 American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (ARRA). The stimulus bill also provided a $2.8 million grant to RG&E this past October that will be used for similar improvements at its 8.5-MW Station 2.

RG&E announced its plan to upgrade Station 2 and Station 5 in 2007.

"We gladly took on this task to ensure our customers received all the ARRA benefits they were entitled to," RG&E president and CEO Mark S. Lynch said. "It's a double win. Our customers and the environment gain since these upgraded plants will continue to generate low-cost, no-barbon energy for decades to come."

The company, a subsidiary of Iberdrola USA, said it has invested more than $111 million into Station 5 to improve the hydroelectric project's capacity and efficiency.

"That work created approximately 393 temporary construction jobs and utilized equipment and materials from hundreds of suppliers in the region," the company said in a release.
