FERC reports expanded 16.9-MW Blue Lake hydro project begins service

Blue Lake Hydropower Project

The Federal Energy Regulatory Commission reported the expanded 16.9-MW Blue Lake hydroelectric project was placed in service in Alaska in November.

The Energy Infrastructure Update for November 2014, compiled by FERC's Office of Energy Projects, listed the Blue Lake report as the sole recorded hydro activity for the month.

FERC approved an amendment in 2012 more than doubling the installed capacity of the 7.54-MW Blue Lake project (No. 2230) operated on Sawmill Creek in Alaska by the City and Borough of Sitka. The amendment authorized an increase in dam height and the replacement of the two-unit main Blue Lake powerhouse with a new three-unit powerhouse, increasing installed capacity by 9.36 MW to a total new capacity of 16.9 MW.

Barnard Construction Co. Inc. was contractor for the Blue Lake expansion, while NAES Power Contractors provided labor and supervision for the installation of three 5.3-MW turbines.

FERC, which previously used the infrastructure update as an in-house tool, began making the monthly update public beginning with December 2010. The report allows the public to track the activities of the Office of Energy Projects in the areas of hydropower, natural gas, electric generation, and electric transmission.
