Canadian utility BC Hydro again extended the deadline for bids to perform site preparation on the north bank of the Peace River for the proposed 1,100-MW Peace River Site C hydroelectric project in British Columbia. Bids now are due Feb. 20.

BC Hydro previously called for bids by Dec. 10 and Jan. 5. British Columbia Premier Christy Clark approved BC Hydro's plans for the project in December, ending speculation that the provincial government might forgo the project in lieu of other alternatives.

Environment Canada and the environment and forestry ministers of British Columbia granted final environmental approvals in October to construct Site C. However, a group of four First Nations and Peace Valley Landowners Association have filed lawsuits against the project.

BC Hydro now seeks proposals to prepare the construction site on the north bank of the Peace River at the location of the proposed dam and project area. Work is to include excavation and disposal of about 3 million cubic meters, quarry development including riprap production of about 100,000 cubic meters, building 7.25 kilometers of access roads, and clearing and grubbing 115 hectares.

A solicitation notice may be obtained from British Columbia's BC Bid Internet site, www.bcbid.gov.bc.ca. Click on Browse, then Browse Using the Advanced Search, Document Number 1951.

Bids now may be submitted via the BC Bid site until 11 a.m., Pacific time, Feb. 20.
