U.S. seeks geospatial data system for Corps' Bluestone Dam

Bluestone Dam

The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers invites expressions of interest to create a geospatial data management system for Bluestone Dam on the New River in West Virginia. Responses are due Jan. 9, 2015.

Based on current hydrologic and structural criteria, the Corps' Dam Safety Assurance Program found potential exists for initiation of failure of Bluestone Dam at a water elevation below the top of the dam. A downstream hazard assessment indicates there is sufficient justification to modify the project to accommodate 100 percent of probable maximum flood.

The dam, which contains 55 monoliths, began operation in 1948. The Corps began geotechnical drilling below the dam in 2013. It awarded a contract in 2012 to Heeter Construction Inc. to install 278 high-capacity multi-strand rock anchors at the project.

The Corps' Huntington District invites expressions of interest in an architect-engineer contract for geospatial data management design, creation and implementation for the Bluestone Dam Safety Assurance Project.
