Yanqi Lake complex in the Huairou district of Beijing, China, is the venue for the 2015 World Hydropower Congress (WHC) being held May 19-21, 2015.

The International Hydropower Association is hosting the event that is endorsed by the National Energy Administration of China and co-sponsored by The Nature Conservancy. IHA and The Nature Conservancy are working with major hydropower companies that include China Three Gorges Corp. and Électricité de France.

WHC 2015 is expected to bring together 1,000 high-level representatives of a range of hydropower stakeholders including industry, governments, civil society, academia and the financial sector, according to a press release from IHA.

Jeff Opperman, lead scientist for The Nature Conservancy’s Great Rivers priority and director of the organization’s global strategy on sustainable hydropower said, taking an active role in planning WHC 2015 represents another step in the Conservancy’s evolving partnership with IHA.

“The partnership is built on results that demonstrate how this collaboration can achieve real progress,” Opperman said. “Although we’ve never before sponsored a hydropower event, this role is consistent with how we’ve worked for more than 60 years.”

Sponsors and partners that support the congress include members from the United Nations, government agencies, universities, hydroelectric owners, manufacturers, conservation groups, investors and banks.

The Yanqi Lake complex is located in one of the most environmentally friendly areas of Beijing close to the Mutianyu Great Wall.

Richard Taylor, chief executive of IHA said, "We are delighted that the World Hydropower Congress will be staged at such a forward-thinking venue. With its mixture of world-class conference facilities and majestic landscape, Yanqi Lake will provide the perfect environment in which to chart the future of hydropower."

Registration opens Dec. 15 online at HydroPower.org/congress. For additional information contact Alex Trembath, IHA communications executive, on at@hydropower.org or 07507661755.
