Isagen is preparing to start operations of its 820-MW Sogamoso hydro project, on the Sogamoso River in Santander department, Colombia. The project is expected to generate 5,056 GWh of electricity annually.
The Sogamoso project consists of a 190-meter-high concrete-faced rockfill dam and three turbine-generator units located in an underground powerhouse. Construction of access roads to the site began in 2009, and the river was diverted in January 2011. The company committed to supply firm energy to the market by December 1, 2014.
Financing for this development came from a variety of sources, including bond issues and 15-year credit notes from financial institution Bancolombia.
According to a document developed by Isagen, companies working on the project include:
-- Grupo ICT II S.A.S., construction of main civil works)
-- Consorcio Integral – VQ Ingenieria, oversaw construction and project startup
-- Consorcio AZVI S.A. – Construirte S.A., construction of replacement work related to Gomez Ortiz Bridge
-- Ingetec Ingenieria y diseno – Ingetec I&D, detailed design, technical support and consulting during construction
-- Ingetec S.A., oversaw replacement construction
-- Consorcio Andritz Hidro Turbina para Sogamoso, design, manufacture, and assembly supervision for three Francis turbines, cylindrical valves, stay vanes and associated equipment

-- Imocom S.A., design, manufacture and assembly supervision of two bridge cranes for the machine room, one bridge crane for the transformer room and one monorail hoist for the removable tube
-- Consorcio Consalfa Hidrosogamoso (Conconreto S.A. y Empresa de montajes industrials Salfa S.A.), assembly, field testing and start-up of all electrical, mechanical and electronic systems and equipment
-- Consorcio Mensula – Urbanas, design and construction of houses for relocation program
Third quarter 2014 financial results released last week by Isagen indicated revenues were up 21% year over year, 10% above the company’s estimates and 11% above market estimates, due in part to “higher contract energy sales to industrial and wholesale end clients in anticipation of the entry into operation of Sogamoso power plant.”
Isagen is a Colombian public utility company primarily dedicated to generating and selling electrical energy.
Other hydro projects being developed in Colombia include the 19.9-MW El Molino and 19.9-MW San Matias facilities.
