U.S. awards excitation system contract for 132-MW Amistad hydro project

Amistad Dam

Seaboard Controls Inc. has received a contract to replace the excitation system of two 33-MW turbine-generators in the U.S. power plant at 132-MW Amistad Dam at Del Rio, Texas.

As main contractor, Seaboard Controls will remove the existing systems and install new excitation systems, type RTX Power, which will be furnished by Reivax North America Inc. in Montreal, Quebec, Canada.

The U.S. Section of the International Boundary and Water Commission took bids for the work in September.

The commission owns and operates the 66-MW U.S. plant and the 66-MW Mexico plant on the Rio Grande along the U.S.-Mexico border, which bisects the dam.

Under the $783,993 contract, Seaboard, of Crosby, Texas, is to replace the excitation system of Generators 1 and 2 that was commissioned in 1981. The commission said the excitation system technology is obsolete and replacement parts are no longer available.

Work includes analyzing the existing excitation system, removing it and installing and testing a new compatible system.

The U.S. section awarded contracts in 2012 to Mike Larsen Co. to repair a penstock bulkgate and to the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers for emergency repairs to Penstock 4.
