Alstom unveils updated Oceade tidal turbine

Improvements make Alstom's new Oceade tidal stream turbine more efficient, cost-effective and easier to maintan that its previous models, the French manufacturer said.

The units, called the "Oceade 18 - 1.4 MW", have a rotor diameter of 18 meters and three variable pitching blades. Alstom (FR: ALO) said the internal components are easily accessible through a rear inspection hatch, making assembly and maintenance faster than before.

The turbines are also buoyant, making them easy to tow to and from operating sites without specialized vessels.

Each Oceade unit will have a nominal output capacity of 1.4 MW.

"With this new tidal energy production solution, Alstom has made definite headway," Alstom New Energies senior vice-president Jacques Jamart said. "The project is seeking to demonstrate a new design for an efficient, reliable turbine to reduce installation and maintenance costs with a view to commercial production."

The Oceade units build on research conducted with a 1 MW tidal stream turbine that was deployed at Scotland's European Marine Energy Centre (EMEC) last year.
