Voith wins award for Lam Ta Khong pumped-storage plant expansion

Lam Ta Khong Pumped-Storage Plant

The Electricity Generation Authority of Thailand has awarded a contract worth US$64.3 million to Voith Hydro to supply electro-mechanical equipment for an expansion of the 500-MW Lam Ta Khong pumped-storage hydropower plant.

The equipment for the project will be manufactured in Voith Hydro's facility in Shanghai and includes two motor generators, two 255 MW vertical pump turbines, automation systems, and electrical and mechanical balance-of-plant systems.

The expansion will more than double Lam Ta Khong's current output capacity and marks Voith Hydro's first work on a pumped-storage facility in southeast Asia. The plant is located on the Lam Ta Khong River about 200 km northeast of Bangkok.

The company said the project is part of Thailand's Renewable and Alternative Energy Development Plan, which seeks to increase the country's renewable energy production to 25% within the next decade.
