Voith Hydro wins contract for Priest Rapids hydro turbine rehabilitations

Priest Rapids Hydroelectric Project

Voith Hydro has been awarded a contract to rehabilitate and upgrade 10 Kaplan turbine units at Washington's 912-MW Priest Rapids hydropower plant.

The decade-long project will begin in 2016. The majority of the work will performed at Voith's facility in York, Pa., the company said, at a rate of one unit per year. Each of the refurbished units will have an output capacity of about 100 MW.

Priest Rapids is located on the Columbia River immediately downstream from the 1,038-MW Wanapum hydroelectric plant. Both are owned by the Grant County Public Utilities District.

"With these improvements, Priest Rapids will continue to serve Grant County PUD customers for many decades to come and continue the Pacific Northwest's leadership in generating the abundant, clean and low-cost hydropower that provides energy to hundreds of thousands of homes and businesses in the region," Voith Hydro York President and CEO Kevin Frank said.

Voith Hydro recently completed the last of 10 turbine upgrades at the Wanapum plant.
