Peru's agency for energy environmental affairs has recommended environmental approval of the 195-MW, three-plant Araza River hydroelectric complex, subject to 15 conditions for environmental mitigation and monitoring.

Electro Araza S.A.C. proposes constructing the Araza River project including the 35-MW Limacpunco, 80-MW Ttio and 80-MW Capiri hydropower developments on the Araza River in Marcapata and Camanti districts of Quispicanchi Province in Peru's Cusco Region. The US$452 million project is to include three powerhouses containing three Pelton turbine-generators each and a transmission line to connect the project to the national grid.

The projects are expected to be built in 36 months, employing 1,500 people.

In a technical opinion to Peru's water authority, Autoridad Nacional del Agua (ANA), the Direccion General de Asuntos Ambientales Energeticos reviewed the environmental impact study of the Araza River project and recommended that ANA approve the project subject to 15 observations, or recommendations, being implemented by Electro Araza.

Recommendations dealt with steps to protect groundwater, water quality and fisheries as well as monitoring to ensure environmental resources are protected.

Peru's Ministry of Energy and Mines granted concessions in January for a pair of hydropower projects in the Cusco Region, the 49.7-MW Ccollpani and 62.1-MW Vilcanota 4 projects. Other hydro projects in the Cusco Region include 98.5-MW Santa Teresa, 206-MW Machu Picchu, 2,000-MW Inambari and 188.59-MW Retamal.
