Colorado-based water and natural resources consultancy MWH Global has been selected to serve as owner's engineer for the 102-MW Gulpur hydropower project in Pakistan.

The US$350 million contract, awarded by Mira Power Limited, comes after MWH has already performed on-site field reviews and advisory services on Gulpur's design.

The plant is only the third privately-developed hydro facility ever developed in Pakistan, and is located on the Poonch River in the Kotli District of Azad Kashmir.

"We are keen to have MWH on this project," Mira Power senior manager Kiran Fatima said. "Their initial excellent input in basic design and finalization has not only resolved the critical environmental and resettlement issues, but has also reduced the cost of the project." reported the World Bank had agreed to provide $14 billion for the plant's construction this past August.

MWH was also awarded a $17.9 million contract by the U.S. Agency for International Development to perform an environmental and social impact assessment of Pakistan's 4,500-MW Diamer Bhasha project. USAID solicited bids for the work in June.

The study is intended to identify potential environmental, socioeconomic, resettlement and cultural impacts associated with the proposed project, MWH said.

"Pakistan has a long history of embracing hydropower as a clean, renewable form of energy for its residents and we're proud to have helped meet their evolving needs over the last 50 years," MWH President of Energy and Industry Joseph Adams said. "As the country seeks additional energy sources to meet growing needs, we look forward to supporting those two key projects by deploying a diverse set of industry-leading experts."

Diamer Bhasha is also expected to extend the life of the downstream Tarbela Dam complex.
