Abengoa of Spain and Siemens of Germany have received a contract to equip and construct a substation for the 305.5-MW Reventazon hydroelectric project in the Siquirres area of Costa Rica's Limon Province.

With funding from the Inter-American Bank, the US$1.1 billion project is to include a 130-meter-tall dam, a 6.9-square-kilometer reservoir, and a 4.2-km diversion between the dam and powerhouse on the Reventazon River.

The US$15.7 million contract from Costa Rica utility Instituto Costarricense de Electricidad calls for Abengoa, in partnership with Siemens, to supply, construct, and commission a 230-kilovolt transmission substation. The substation is to connect four transmission lines with Reventazon, allowing delivery of power to Costa Rica's national grid.

ICE took bids for the work in November. It also took bids in June from consultants to serve on a panel to supervise construction of Reventazon and in February to supply a trash rake for the project.

ICE awarded a contract to Italian manufacturer Ergonbluenergy earlier this month to supply two trash rake cleaning machines for Reventazon.
