Colombia extends call for technical evaluation of 2,400-MW Ituango hydro project

Ituango Hydropower Plant

Colombia utility Empresas Publicas de Medellin (EPM) has extended the deadline for expressions of interest from consultants to perform a technical evaluation of the 2,400-MW Ituango hydroelectric project in Colombia. Responses now are due July 2.

EPM previously called for responses by June 24 and also invited expressions of interest by June 18 from consultants to perform ecological studies of Ituango.

The utility recruited consultants in April to develop water quality models for the proposed reservoir and downstream of Ituango. Last year, it recruited a financial consultant for the project. Alstom received a contract in 2012 to supply eight 300-MW Francis turbines, along with speed regulators, cylindrical gates, generators and excitation systems.

EPM now seeks expressions of interest from consultants to perform a technical evaluation of Ituango, including determining the reliability of project technical studies, identifying any technical defect that could affect construction and operation, and establishing appropriate mitigation. The work is expected to require 90 days.

Expressions of interest now are due by hard copy in Spanish to the address below by 4 p.m. July 2.
