Bolivia seeks bids to complete interrupted dam work on 80-MW Misicuni hydro project

Misicuni Hydropower Plant

Empresa Misicuni, Bolivia's special purpose company to develop the Misicuni multi-purpose hydroelectric project, seeks bids from firms to resume construction of Misicuni Dam, spillway and related underground construction works. Bids are due June 12.

Empresa Misicuni awarded a contract in 2009 to Italian-led consortium Consorcio Hidroelectrico Misicuni for the second phase of the project including construction of the 120-meter-tall dam, water conduit and potable water treatment plant to impound water for drinking, irrigation and for a subsequent 80-MW hydroelectric plant. However, that contract was rescinded in November 2013, Empresa Misicuni said, for "different factors" affecting normal development of the project and for causes it attributed to Consorcio Hidroelectrico Misicuni.

Separate contracting has been under way for the hydropower plant phase of the project. Bolivia utility Empresa Nacional de Electricidad (ENDE) awarded contracts in 2012 to Carlos Caballero S.R.L. to supply a penstock and steel surge shaft liner, and to Dessau International Inc. to supervise construction of the 80-MW Misicuni hydroelectric project. ENDE took bids in January for turbine-generators and other equipment for the hydro plant and in 2012 for construction of underground works of the power plant.

Empresa Misicuni now seeks bids for four packages of work to resume the interrupted second phase construction: Package 1, dam, weir and underground works; Package 2, grout injections; Package 3, instrumentation; and Package 4, communication systems and power distribution.
