U.S. seeks firms to replace relays, switchgear at 21.5-MW St. Marys Falls hydro project

The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers seeks information on firms able to replace protective relays and switchgear/motor control assemblies at the 21.5-MW St. Marys Falls hydro project on the St. Marys River at Sault Ste. Marie, Mich. Responses are due April 10.

The Corps' St. Marys Falls project is one of three hydro projects at Soo Locks, the navigation link between Lake Superior and the lower Great Lakes. The others are the 27-MW Edison Sault Electric project, and the nearby 52-MW Francis H. Clergue project.

The Corps' Detroit District awarded a contract last year to Windemuller Electric to supply a step-up transformer at Soo Locks. It took bids in 2010 to reconstruct 300 feet of crib dam at Soo Locks.

In a sources sought notice, the Corps now seeks information on firms able to replace the equipment at the St. Marys Falls hydro plant. It plans to use the information to determine the extent of industry interest and experience in the work.

The protective relays monitor the current, voltage, frequency and other types of electric power measurement for the purpose of triggering circuit breakers in the event of an abnormal condition. The switchgear/motor control assemblies provide centralized control, protection and distribution of electrical power to auxiliary plant equipment and circuits. The work is valued at $1 million to $5 million.
