The government of the Solomon Islands invites expressions of interest from consultants to provide design support and construction supervision for the 750-kW Fiu River hydroelectric project. Responses are due April 18.

The hydro project work is being funded by the Asian Development Bank (ADB) under the Provincial Renewable Energy Project for the Solomon Islands. The government recruited consultants in 2012 for another project, the 15-MW Tina River hydroelectric project. The World Bank recruited hydropower engineers in 2011 for hydroelectric projects in the Solomons and Papua New Guinea and recruited consultants in 2007 for study of the Ngalimbu Hydropower Development in the Solomons.

The Solomons' Ministry for Mines, Energy and Rural Electrification seeks consultants to serve on a panel for design and supervision of Fiu River, a run-of-river project to be built on the Fiu in Malaita Province with an initial installed capacity of 500 kW. The project is to include a low weir, single-gated sluice, fish bypass, intake, sand trap, 1.55-kilometer headrace canal, head pond, 250-meter steel penstock, powerhouse and 8.6-kilometer transmission line.

With a budget of US$1.38 million, the ministry seeks a panel including a team leader-hydropower engineer, financial specialist, geotechnical engineer, hydrologist, civil engineer, electro-mechanical engineer, transmission and distribution engineer, environment specialist, social-resettlement specialist, electrical engineer, drafting specialist, and administrative support.

A solicitation notices, including terms of reference, may be obtained from the ADB Internet site, www.adb.org, under the links "Businesses," "Consulting Opportunities," "Energy," "LOAN 46014-002."

Expressions of interest are to be submitted via the ADB website by April 18. For information, contact Ministry for Mines, Energy and Rural Electrification, P.O. Box G37, Honiara, Solomon Islands; (677) 25121; Fax: (677) 25811; E-mail: mary@mines.gov.sb, margret@mines.gov.sb. The ADB contact is Anthony Maxwell, Senior Energy Specialist, Asian Development Bank, E-mail: amaxwell@adb.org.
