World Bank's Meike van Ginneken to speak during HydroVision International keynote

The organizers of HydroVision International 2014 are pleased to announce that Meike van Ginneken of the World Bank will participate as a keynote speaker at the upcoming conference and exhibition in Nashville, Tenn.

Van Ginneken serves as the World Bank's sector manager for energy in west and central Africa, leading a team dedicated to improving access and quality of energy services in 26 countries.

The World Bank's Africa energy program is growing, covering both reform and investment support in power generation, transmission and distribution; rural energy services; and renewable and low-carbon initiatives.

The organization said it is focused on developing private financing for Africa's energy sector, often working in partnership with other World Bank Group agencies like the International Finance Corporation (IFC) and Multilateral Investment Guarantee Agency (MIGA).

Both large and small hydropower projects have become an emphasis for the World Bank's efforts in Africa, with recent projects including the 63-MW Felou, 147-MW Adjarala, and 4,800-MW Inga 3.

The bank's current Africa energy portfolio comprises more than 50 projects with a value of US$10 billion, with new lending now exceeding $1 billion per year.

"With the World Bank's prominent role in developing hydroelectric power both in Africa and across the globe, we are excited to include Meike van Ginneken as a speaker in this year's opening session," said Marla Barnes, Publisher of Hydro Review and HRW-Hydro Review Worldwide magazines.

Van Ginneken is expected to not only reassert the World Bank's support for hydropower, but also speak on a number of issues important to both power developers and power beneficiaries -- including energy's role in developing countries; changes and trends; financing; and technical, physical, social, environmental and fiscal sustainability.

Prior to joining the World Bank in 2002, van Ginneken began her career with Doctors Without Borders building water and sanitation facilities for refugee and disaster victims in Bangladesh, El Salvador, Sudan and Tanzania. She has also spent time working for the Global Water Partnership in Sweden on Integrated Water Resources Management.

Since coming to the World Bank, van Ginneken has worked on water, energy and urban development at the bank's headquarters, and in the Central African Republic and Cameroon, during which time she served as project leader for the 30-MW Lom Pangar project.

Van Ginneken holds a Masters of Science in Water Management, Environmental, and Sanitary Engineering from the School of Civil Engineering, Delft University of Technology in The Netherlands and an Executive Masters in Consulting and Coaching for Change from HEC Paris and the Saïd Business School, University of Oxford.

She joins U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Lieutenant General Thomas P. Bostick, who was announced as a HydroVision International 2014 keynote speaker in February.

HydroVision International, now in its 20th year, is the world's largest hydro event. This year's conference and exhibition takes place July 22-25 at Nashville's Music City Center.
