Malawi extends call for gates, civil construction, weed collector at Kamuzu Barrage

The government of Malawi has extended the deadlines for bids for gates, civil construction and a jib crane/weed collector for the upgrade of Kamuzu Barrage at Liwonde on Malawi's Shire River. Bids in separate solicitations now are due March 24 and April 4.

The government previously called for bids by February 28 and March 21.

Refurbishment of the half-century-old Kamuzu Barrage is part of the World Bank-financed Shire River Basin Management Program as well as the Integrated Water Resources Management Plan for Lake Malawi and the Shire River System. Malawi has issued a number of recent solicitations under the Shire Basin program, including a call for a feasibility study of the 160- to 370-MW Kholombidzo hydroelectric project on the Shire River.

Malawi recruited consultants in 2013 to provide construction supervision to upgrade Kamuzu Barrage to increase Shire River Basin water security for critical uses including hydropower projects.

The Ministry of Water Development and Irrigation now seeks bids by 2 p.m. March 24 to supply and install gates at Kamuzu. Bidding documents in English may be obtained from the first address below for US$100 in cash or bank-certified check. Bids labeled "Supply and Installation of Gates for the Upgraded Kamuzu Barrage" are to be submitted to the second address below.

The ministry now seeks bids by 2 p.m. April 4 for civil works construction to upgrade Kamuzu. Contractors are to have experience in embankment dams, cofferdams, foundations, weather rock and residual soils, sheet steel piling, concrete dams and bridge construction. Bidding documents in English may be obtained from the first address below for US$100 in cash or bank-certified check. Bids labeled "Civil Works for the Upgraded Kamuzu Barrage" are to be submitted to the second address below.

The ministry also now seeks bids by 2 p.m. April 4 for supply and installation of a hydraulic jib crane/weed collector for Kamuzu. The supplier is to have experience in supplying trash cleaning equipment for the hydropower industry. Bidding documents in English may be obtained from the first address below for US$100 in cash or bank-certified check. Bids labeled "Supply and Installation of Hydraulic Jib Crane/Weed Collector for the Upgraded Kamuzu Barrage" are to be submitted to the second address below.
