Illwerke selects Alstom to supply generators, exciters for Obervermuntwerk 2 pumped-storage project

Vorarlberger Illwerke AG has awarded Alstom a contract to supply two generators and exciters for the Obervermuntwerk 2 pumped-storage hydropower plant in Montafon, Austria.

The value of the award was not disclosed, but Alstom said each generator will have an output of 180 MW and that they are "specifically designed for flexible use".

The 360 MW pumped-storage project will be Illwerke's second-largest power station once put into operation in 2018. The plant is designed as an underground station between the Silvretta and Vermunt reservoirs parallel to the existing Obervermuntwerk project.

"Given the expansion of intermittent energy production sources which increases the need for storage, pumped-storage will play a greater role in tomorrow's energy market," Alstom Renewable Austria GmbH managing director Josef Reisel said. "It is the most efficient and flexible form of storing electricity on a grid scale, enabling utilities to respond quickly to demand and balance the grid."

The manufacturer is currently involved in the development and expansion of a number of pumped-storage projects around the world, including the 900-MW Nant de Drance and 1-GW Linthal 2015 plants in Switzerland, and the 1-GW Tehri plant in India.

HydroWorld.com reported in February that Voith had been awarded a US$47.6 million contract from Illwerke to supply and commission Obervermuntwerk 2's storage pumps and hydraulic torque converters.
