Hydro Tasmania looking for clues to its past

Tarraleah School Photo

Australian utility Hydro Tasmania is seeking help as the company prepares to celebrate its 100th anniversary later this year.

The centennial recognizes the creation of the company's original Hydro Electric Department in October 1914, which was subsequently known as the Hydro-Electric Commission and Hydro-Electric Corporation before becoming Hydro Tasmania.

The company -- best known to Tasmanians simply as "The Hydro" -- hopes to identify those who appear in a school photograph taken in 1935 during the construction of the 90-MW Tarraleah hydropower project.

The school was created for the families of those involved in constructing the plant, which is located along the Upper Derwent River.

"We know where the photo was taken but have been unable to identify the students or their teachers," Hydro Tasmania representative Lara Van den Berg said. "What we are asking for is the public's help in putting names to these young faces and their teachers."

The photograph was originally included in an oral history of the company titled, "Ticklebelly Tales", that was re-released this past year.

"We believe the children would now be well into their 80s and we are hoping many of them will not only be alive but still living in Tasmania," Van den Berg said. "Hopefully they or family members will see the photo and can help us solve the puzzle."

Those with further information about the photograph -- or those with other connections to the company's history -- are asked to contact Hydro Tasmania via a special website created for the centenary, Hydro100.com.au.
