A "comprehensive modernization" program of nine hydropower projects through 2013 by Russian utility JSC RusHydro has resulted in 737 MW of new cumulative installed capacity.

The US$942.8 million overhaul project included work at a number of hydroelectric plants, with work including both turbine replacement and rehabilitation, and other mechanical and electrical upgrades.

RusHydro (LSE: HYDR) said the largest volume of work took place in the Volga-Karma cascade, with a new 65 MW unit replacing an old 55 MW unit at the Rybinskaya hydropower project. Meanwhile, a new 54 MW unit was commissioned at Saratovskaya, and Kamskaya, Volzhskaya and Zhigulevskaya each got two modernized units.

In addition, Nizhegorodskaya, Kamskaya, Votkinskaya and Zhigulevskaya all had gates of spillway dams replced, while switchyards were modernized at Rybinskaya, Votkinskaya, Saratovskaya, Maynskaya and others. Construction of a new spillway at the Egorlyskaya plant is also now under way.

Modernizations will continue through 2014, RusHydro said, with turbine units being upgraded at Chebokarskaya, Kamskaya, Zhigulevskaya, Saratovskaya, Volzhskaya, Novosibiriskaya, Miatlinskaya and others.

Switchyard reconstruction at Rybinskaya, Zhigulevskaya and Zelenchukskaya is also planned, with a new spillway to also be built at Egorlykskaya.
