Alstom and its consortium partner, Hydrochina Zhongnan Engineering Corporation, have signed a US$144.76 million contract with Electricity of Viet Nam (EVN) to provide electromechanical equipment for the 1,200-MW Lai Chau hydropower project.

As per the contract, Alstom is to supply three 400-MW Francis turbine and generator sets, as well as mechanical and electrical auxiliaries. Alstom said the equipment will be manufactured at the company's "Global Technology Centre" in Tianjin.

HydroWorld.com reported in June 2012 that RusHydro's Institut Hydroproject had completed the technical designs for the $1.8 billion Lai Chau complex. The Vietnam Development Bank awarded a $219 million loan for its construction in May 2011.
