Brazil's Itaipu hydropower plant sets new production record in 2012

Itaipu Hydropower Plant

PARANA, Brazil (1/7/13) -- Brazil's 14,000-MW Itaipu hydroelectric project established a new record for generation in 2012, according to operator Itaipu Binacional.

Itaipu said the plant ended producing more than 98 TWh, which surpasses the previous record of 94.6 TWh that was set in 2008.

The news follows a previous announcement made by Itaipu in October, which said its August production was second only to an earlier record also established in 2008.

"Production in 2012 exceed all expectations," a company release said. "The record is due to several factors, among them the atypical month of December which was one of the hottest of all time."

The Itaipu complex, located on the Parana River between the Brazil and Paraguay border, produced enough power in 2012 to meet all of Paraguay's power needs for nine years, or the entire planet for two days.

"The new mark was achieved through the optimization of water use and the excellent coordination between Eletrobras and Ande, as well as Furnas, Copel and Brazil's national grid operator, ONS," said Celso Torino, Itaipu's chief of Brazilian operations.

Itaipu Binacional's Sistema Inteligente de Alarma da Barragem (SIAB), a dam safety program, was awarded Project of the Year honors at HydroVision Brasil 2012.
