Alstom Power has completed its acquisition of marine power technology developer Tidal Generation Limited (TGL) from Rolls-Royce PLC, HydroWorld.com has learned.
Alstom (FR: ALO) announced that it had signed an agreement to take over TGL in September 2012 in order to continue the company's efforts in developing "the broadest portfolio in the renewable power industry".
TGL -- based in Bristol, England -- specializes in the manufacture and design of tidal stream turbines. The company successfully deployed a 500 kW test unit at the European Marine Energy Centre's (EMC) Orkney Island testing site in March 2012, paving the way for a larger 1 MW unit installed at the same site earlier this month.
The newest unit will be evaluated through the next 18 months as part of the Energy Technologies Institute's (ETI) ReDAPT (Reliable Data Acquisition Platform for Tidal) consortium project. This testing will lead to the installation of pilot arrays before full commercial production, Alstom said.
"This new milestone installation in the development of tidal power generation technology is a step further towards the commercialization of this new power solution," Alstom New Energies Vice-President Jacques Jamart said.
