Wave power developer Minesto honored at international conference

Minesto Deep Green Unit

Swedish marine energy developer Minesto was recently given the Industry Pioneer Award at the International Tidal Energy Summit in London for its work in developing the "Deep Green" power plant.

The company said it won the prize for "having proved that it is possible to harvest electricity from low velocity currents".

"We are proud to receive this very prestigious international award," Minesto CEO Anders Jansson said. "It is rewarding to know that tidal energy industry experts thing that Minesto deserves the title as 'industry pioneers'. It shows that the entire industry is interest in, or impressed by, the success we have had with Deep Green and the fact that we now produce electricity from low velocity currents."

Minesto describes the Deep Green system as an "underwater kite, comprised of a wing and a turbine which is secured to the seabed with a tether." The unit then "moves with great speed in an 8-shaped path in the tidal or ocean current", thus spinning the turbine and generating power.

The company recently announced that a quarter-scale prototype is now generating power off the waters in Strangford Lough, Northern Ireland.

The trials will pave the way for a full-scale Deep Green installation, which is planned for 2015 and also possibly to be located in the United Kingdom.

The company was also recently recognized as one of the country's hottest young technology companies in being named to the "33 List" compiled by technology magazine Ny Teknik and business publication Affarsvarlden.
