U.S. seeks firms able to repair dam joints at 2,160-MW John Day hydro project

The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers seeks information on firms able to perform specific drilling and grouting services to repair failed monolith joint waterstops at 2,160-MW John Day Dam on the Columbia River in Oregon. Responses are due Jan. 13, 2014.

The Corps' Portland District awarded a $637,269 contract in December to J.E. McAmis Inc. for dam safety work to repair failed monolith waterstops at John Day. It awarded a contract in October to Knight Construction & Supply Inc. to replace wire rope and perform load testing for an emergency intake crane and took bids in September to refurbish thrust bearing shoes and thrust runners.

In a sources sought notice, the Corps now seeks information on firms with the ability to repair failed monolith joint waterstops by drilling a near-vertical 6-inch hole that straddles the monolith joint, extending through the entire structure into the bedrock below, and filling the hole with expanding grout to restore the waterstop. Responses will be used to help make an acquisition decision for the work.
