Ireland utility seeks construction of 5-MW West Wave energy project

Ireland's Electricity Supply Board (ESB) invites expressions of interest to supply and install the 5-MW West Wave energy project off the west coast of Ireland. Responses are due January 31, 2014.

The state-owned company launched in 2008 a 22 billion euro (US$34.72 billion) investment program, half of which it plans to spend on renewable energy sources such as ocean, wind and biomass power. The utility's ESB International agreed with Marine Current Turbines in 2010 to develop the initial phase of a 100-MW tidal energy project at Strangford Lough off the Antrim coast of Northern Ireland. ESB also signed a deal in 2009 with Irish wave energy developer Wavebob to help the company develop its wave energy converter technology.

In the current solicitation, ESB invites expressions of interest from firms to participate in procurement for supply, installation and all ancillary requirements of a 5-MW wave energy array at one of a number of potential locations off the west coast of Ireland. The work is expected to require 30 months.

Solicitation documents may be obtained until 5 p.m. January 17 from the address below.

Responses are due January 31. For information, contact Patricia Brennan, Procurement, ESB Generation and Wholesale Markets, Electricity Supply Board, 27 Lower Fitzwilliam St., 2 Dublin, Ireland; (353) 1-7026686; Fax: (353) 1-6384603; E-mail:; Internet:
