Alstom receives additional order for 3,568-MW Santo Antonio hydropower plant

Santo Antonio Hydropower Plant

Alstom has been awarded a contract to supply additional equipment for Brazil's 3,568-MW Santo Antonio hydropower project, the company has announced.

Per a US$109.8 million deal signed this week, Alstom will supply two bulb turbines, four generators, two speed governors, two excitation systems and six bus bars. Meanwhile, IMMA -- a joint venture between Alstom and Bardella -- will be responsible for the project's hydromechanical and lifting equipment.

Alstom is already working to fulfill a 2008 contract for the project, which includes 19 turbines and 22 generators. The company said about 40% of the equipment from that order is already in successful operation.

The equipment is being manufactured in Alstom's Taubate facility.

Santo Antonio is located on the Madeira River in Brazil's Rondonia State.

HydroWorld.com reported in June that Brazil's Agencia Nacional de Energy Eletricqa (ANEEL) had authorized commercial production from the project's 13th hydro turbine.

The first of Santo Antonio's 44 turbines began generating power in February 2012. Brazil's Institute of the Environment and Natural Resources (IBAMA) then granted a license for its operation in October.

The $8 billion project is part of the 6.9-GW Rio Madeira hydropower complex, which also includes the 3,750-MW Jirau hydroelectric plant.
