Voith investing in hydropower project automation systems

Hydropower technology manufacturer Voith Hydro said investments into its research and development efforts will allow it to expand its line of HyCon automation systems.

The company said its HyCon product line has seen a "significant" increase in sales the past two years, with products including voltage regulators and excitation systems, speed governors, supervision and control systems, and monitoring systems.

The expansion will allow for the development and improvement of the HyCon line at Voith's facility in Sao Paulo. It will also allow Voith to better tailor systems to customers' specifications before the parts leave the manufacturer.

"With the preliminary tests undertaken in our lab, we are able to simulate operating conditions to match real power plants very closely," Voith Hydro Brazil president and CEO Osvaldo San Martin said. "This allows us to adjust the systems to the plants' characteristics beforehand, thereby reducing the implementation time frame and thus the energy generation unavailability brought by it."

HyCon automation systems have already been installed in a number of Latin American projects, including the Salto Pilao, Serra do Facao, Estreito, Amoya, Baba, Confluencia, Palomino and Palo Viejo. Voith said they will also be used at the Belo Monte and Teles Pires projects.
